Episode 4A: The Weight of Command
Kirk sits in his quarters, staring at the stars streaking past his window. The decision he made on Zeta Epsilon II weighs heavily on his mind. By choosing to follow the Prime Directive and not intervene in the alien civilization's plight, he may have condemned them to a fate worse than death.
The chime of his door interrupts his brooding. “Come,” he calls, straightening his uniform.
Spock enters, his hands clasped behind his back. “Captain, I have completed my analysis of the energy readings from the alien village.”
Kirk leans forward, his interest piqued. “What have you found, Spock?”
“The energy signature matches that of a highly advanced psionic weapon, one capable of manipulating matter on a subatomic level. If deployed on a planetary scale, it could potentially alter the fabric of reality itself.”
Kirk feels a chill run down his spine. “And we just left it in the hands of a primitive civilization?”
“Affirmative. However, it is unlikely they possess the knowledge to activate or control such a device.”
“But someone else might.” Kirk's mind races with the implications. “Spock, what if the distress call wasn't meant for us? What if it was a lure, designed to draw out whoever left that weapon behind?”
Spock's eyebrow rises. “A logical hypothesis, Captain. But to what end?”
“That's what we need to find out.” Kirk stands, his resolve hardening. “Set a course back to Zeta Epsilon II, maximum warp. And alert Starfleet Command. We may be dealing with a threat far greater than we imagined.”
As the Enterprise hurtles through space, Kirk can only hope that they're not too late. The fate of not just one world, but the entire galaxy, may depend on what they find.
